San Luis Potosi

San Luis Potosi, commonly called
SLP or simply San Luis, is the capital of the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi which is located in the north central region of the country and occupies a wide area of the Mexican Republic. Its historic downtown displays so a great mixture of different artistic styles that in 2010 were listed as a UNESCO World Site Heritage. The city owes its early importance to the discovery of a large silver and gold deposit in 1592. Since then the city became an important administrative and commercial outpost that in the 17th century assumed the role of Mexico’s most important Northern City. SLP makes an excellent side trip for any colonial cities tour, as it is easily reached from Queretaro and other central colonial cities as Zacatecas and Michoacán.

San Luis Potosi is a state which boasts a variety of ecosystems, it has three touristic regions: the Central Area, which has a forest climate and springs for diving; the desert of the Altiplano featuring Real de Catorce as its main attraction; the Huasteca Potosina and the Sierra Gorda, a myriad of valleys and plains. Do not miss the opportunity to visit the monuments and plazas in San Luis Potosi’s Historic Centre like the “Plaza del Carmen”, the San Francisco Garden with its temple, the “Fundadores Plaza”, the “Plaza de Armas”, the Cathedral, and more which have been highlighted with artificial light.
